High visibility clothing

Protective clothing certified according to EN ISO 20471, high visibility clothing, makes the wearer visible in situations and environments where it is critical to be seen, in order to avoid accidents. The properties and the design of the garments makes the wearer visible from all directions and in all light conditions of the day and under directional lighting in the dark.

Performance requirements are set for both fluorescent and reflective material. The colour and luminance of the material are tested both before and after the maximum number of washes. The luminance is the fluorescent effect of the material, which means that the colour is perceived as luminescent. Approved fluorescent colours are yellow, orange and red. The function of the reflective material is also tested both before and after the maximum number of washes.

The standard sets requirements for total are of fluorescent and reflective materials as well as design. The combination of fluorescent and reflective materials provides the wearer visibility from all directions. The reflective material is placed around the arms, legs and upper body to clarify the wearer’s movements.

There are three classes of high visibility clothing, which are defined according to minimum areas of fluorescent and reflective materials.

Class 1Class 2Class 3
Background material0,140,500,80
Reflective material0,100,130,20

Each high-visibility garment has a classification. It is also possible to combine two garments to attain a higher classification than the class the garments reach individually. Such a combination must also be certified to ensure that all requirements for each class are met.
More information regarding Blåkläder’s co-certification programme can be found here.

Logo placement on high visibility garments
When a high visibility garment shall be applied with a logo, both size of the logo and placement are important to consider. The logo must not reduce the fluorescent area below the requirements set in the standard or shift the balance of the fluorescent area between the front and back of the garment (ratio 4: 6). When a logo is applied on contrast material, the size of the logo can be chosen freely without affecting the fluorescent properties.
High visibility garments must be kept clean, worn completely closed and not covered by other garments or equipment.
